china: through the looking glass

It’s Met Gala week and while I haven’t yet toured the museum’s newest show, ‘Manus x Machina: Fashion in the Age of Technology‘, since I wasn’t blogging last year I never shared my take on (and photos of) 2015’s extravagant exhibit, ‘China: Through the Looking Glass.’ That exhibit was stunning. Designed to show the impact of Chinese aesthetics on Western fashion, it was incredibly immersive–nestled among ancient Chinese art, with music, ambient lighting, and film–and comprehensive, showcasing a variety of items from all time periods in addition to the standard modern haute couture. The size did get the best of it at times, and the theme often got unfocused as the huge show unfolded. The show was massive, sprawling through many galleries and floors, making it almost impossible to absorb it all. Still, it was visually stunning, memorable, and, incredibly, record-breaking.

Enjoy this look back, and let me know if you got a chance to view it yourself last spring/summer!
