Springtime in New York is heralded by many things but the season’s real showstopper–and it seems to get bigger each year–is the annual Met Gala, the ‘party of the year’ held at the museum the first Monday evening in May. My art history connections have allowed me to score a stunning behind-the-scenes look the past few years and yesterday was no exception. The exhibition itself is always fascinating–I love being able to view all those dresses and accessories up-close–but the event is something else entirely. To walk among the planning and execution of such a fete is both mind-blowing and mind-numbing. There is just so many raw materials and so much man-power brought out for something that lasts only a few hours and is mostly viewed in passing via mood-lighting (plus everything’s disassembled, minus most of the now-iconic tent, by the next morning). Of course it still manages to take my breath away and pack some surprises–a few years ago I stumbled upon Anna Wintour while exploring, and this year the same thing happened with Vogue legend André Leon Talley.
