I have a habit of always tucking in my shirts. For some reason I think it creates a more flattering, more dressy, and more polished look. This button-down is so comfy that I could wear it everyday–and sometimes I feel like i do–so to change things up a bit I decided to wear it untucked. The result? The shirt felt reinvented and I had a whole new look to sport on a date-night.
What do you think? Tucked or untucked–which do you prefer when it comes to shirts?
p.s. Thank you for all your kind words on Facebook, Twitter, and this site regarding my One-year Blogiversary (click here to see the post celebrating that day)–they meant so, so much to me. Stay tuned–there are a lot of exciting things in the works for The Beautiful Things! x

I loved Italian Wedding Soup from the moment I first tasted it, but it wasn't until I tracked down a recipe that I realized why its broth tasted so good. The secret, unsurprisingly, is cheese: by simmering the meatballs in the soup–rather than browning them elsewhere–the entire dish takes on the wonderfully pervasive taste of parmesan. The three other key ingredients are just as yummy: small meatballs, tiny pasta–always go with acini di pepe ('peppercorns') if you can just because they're so cute–and leafy greens. And if you're wondering what exactly this soup has to do with weddings, the answer isn't what you think. The name actually comes from a mistranslation of minestra maritata, which refers to the soup's well-paired ingredients and not actual ceremonies of union.

Ingredients
For soup:
2 tablespoons Olive Oil
2 onions, chopped
3 medium carrots, chopped
2 stalks celery, chopped
2 tablespoons garlic, minced
64 oz reduced sodium chicken broth
1 10-oz. package frozen chopped spinach, thawed, squeezed to remove excess water
3 oz acini de pepe pasta
salt and pepper, to taste
For Meatballs:
1/2 lb. ground beef
1/3 cup Italian breadcrumbs
1 egg, beaten
1/4 cup grated parmesean cheese
5 fresh basil leaves, finely chopped
salt and pepper, to taste
Preparation
1. In a large pot, heat olive oil. Add the chopped carrot, onion, garlic, celery, and saute until soft, about 10 minutes. Add chicken broth, stir, and increase heat to high.
2. In a medium mixing bowl combine the ground beef, beaten egg, breadcrumbs, cheese and basil. Add salt and pepper. Mix ingredients and form into small balls of a consistent size, about 1/2 inch wide.
3. Once soup has come to a rapid boil, gently add meatballs into pot. Allow to boil for 5 minutes (do not stir). Turn heat to low and simmer an additional 10 minutes.
5. Add the spinach and pasta and simmer an additional 10 minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste. Serve soup with grated parmesean cheese and crusty Italian bread.

It's hard for me to believe that it has been one full year since 'The Beautiful Things' began. I started this site to share what in my life makes me the happiest with the hope that it would resonate with some people. Never could I have expected or imagined the wonderful response I–and my blog–have received. My experience over the past twelve months hasn't for one moment been anything but amazing. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for reading, commenting, and always being so sweet. I'm already excited for my future posts–and I hope you are too.
Happy Birthday 'The Beautiful Things'–I wish you many, many more.

A dress, a bag, shoes–you might think it may be too much McQueen for just one outfit to carry. However Olivia Wilde–more often than not a fashion miss in my book–did it and more by really pulling together this look. To start, she kept all the pieces by the fashion house to a foolproof standard black and accessorized with lots of gold jewelry (I love her belt, it's so unique). The result? A McQueen-guided take on the 'little black dress' that's both modern and stunning.
What do you think? Would you wear this look–or style it completely differently?
p.s. Speaking of Mr. McQueen, check out this fantastic giveaway on one of my favorite blogs, "In a Blonde World" for a 'Manta' clutch in a gorgeous emerald green. It's too amazing to pass up! x

Like lots of other women–and more celebrities than I can think of (see here, here, here, and what seems like a pretty comprehensive photo gallery here)– I love Isabel Marant's 'Dicker' suede ankle boots. Of course they're pretty pricey (available here if you're willing to spend the $500 they currently cost), which is why I could not resist this pair that are nearly identical in shape and color when I spotted them in-store with my sister. Even though they're an 'inspired-by' shoe, the booties are everything I dreamed they would be: comfortable despite a small heel and easy to style thanks to a unique shape and a perfectly neutral color.

I suppose there are worse fashion crimes than dressing in head-to-toe black, but I know for me a monochromatic look signals that I'm being both indulgent and a little lazy. It's my 'go-to,' the easiest way to make accessories pop, take the guesswork out of matching, and look put-together in an way that doesn't seem to try too hard. In the end I hardn't pay attention to my own thoughts: despite it being a very unoriginal preference in New York City, black definitely remains my favorite color when it comes to clothes.

What gets me through the end of sandal-weather is the thought of boot-weather. Sure, at first glance the colors and details are less fun when summer shoes switch to autumn ones, but the possibilities are really just as varied and interesting. I never really appreciated ankle boots–I always loved the knee-high length somewhat exclusively–but the style has really grown on me a lot. Fiorentini & Baker boots almost always leave me swooning and this "Nubis" pair is no exception. With hand-tinted black suede, a perfectly placed buckle, and an real-wood stacked heel, they're luxe enough to dress up but still a bit rugged for more causal looks.

Lately I've all but cut processed foods from my diet. It may be a sign of control issues, but generally speaking I like to know as much as possible what exactly goes into my food. These crisped rice treats fall a bit out of line from this habit: the cereal and marshmallows come from a box and bag, respectively. Still, they're so much more special–and tasty–than the prepackaged 'Rice Krispie Treats' that were often found in my childhood lunch box. Plus by using canola oil instead of butter they're better for your heart and there isn't that strange aftertaste present in most other recipes. The process is so easy from start to finish that you may find yourself having to find reasons not to make a batch more often.

Ingredients:
3 tablespoons canola oil
4 cups marshmallows
6 cups crisped rice cereal
Dash of vanilla
Directions:
1. In a large pot, heat the canola oil over medium low heat.
2. Add marshmallows. Stir until melted.
3. Add a dash of vanilla. Stir until smooth.
4. Remove from heat. Add cereal. Mix thoroughly.
5. Grease a 13 x 9 (or similarly sized) baking dish. Spread the mixture evenly until flat. Cut into squares after hardening (about 10 minutes). Drizzle with melted chocolate if desired.
I've been looking for the perfect pair of skinnies ever since I felt the air get the slightest bit cooler–the end of summer always makes me panicky about the state of my fall staples. I've fallen in love with the fit and wash of this pair from J,Crew. At first I thought the cropped ankle-length would be limiting, but now that I've worn them with my highest heels (for the record they're a glorious five-and-a-half inches tall with a one-and-a-half inch platform), I'm not worrying anymore.
