{things i wore} floral silk scarf

A while ago I saw someone wearing a silk scarf tied to a tank top on thier blog and finally decided to give it a try. Not only is it now my new favorite way to add some color and style to an otherwise simple look, it's so easy to do: just fold a scarf in half, allow two ends to form a point in the front, and tie the other two ends onto each of your shoulder straps. Use your hair to hide where you've attached the scarf, and voilà–a completely casual way to wear a piece that's sometimes hard to style.

p.s. The sunglasses I'm wearing are the same model three lucky readers can win in my latest giveaway! Remember, today is your last chance to ENTER….click HERE for all the details!

{things i made} chocolate ricotta bundt cake

During the summer months, I always find it hard to resist the urge to bake. It's usually too hot to turn on the oven, but when I'm craving a homemade treat all the common sense in the world can't stop me from digging out my electric mixer and assembling something sweet. This recipe was born out of necessity: I had some leftover ricotta cheese that I didn't want to see go to waste. The end result was a light but decadent chocolate cake perfect for lazy–and warm–summer afternoons.

{things i wore} wood bead stretch bracelet

I love stacking bracelets–some mornings I could spend forever getting the collection on my wrist just right. My newest piece is exquisitely detailed–wooden beads complete with a ridged shark-tooth charm–and came to me courtesy of Kevia. Founded by Kevia Jeffrey-West while she was earning her bachelor's degree in Zimbabwe, the company is known for their hammered metal settings, irregularly cut stones, and motifs inspired by nature. All that makes the jewelry unique and completely perfect for summer.

{things i liked} victoria beckham + a tuxedo skirt

I've said it before and I'll say it again: for an outfit I love the combination of black and white. It's classic, clean, and timeless. Victoria Beckham was all of those things–and also not very happy-looking but that's hardly noteworthy–when she stepped out in a crisp pairing of a white Jil Sander Navy shirt and a black Maison Martin Margiela skirt. Tuxedo-ed things have been pegged as a must-have for fall and while I was busy picturing jackets and pants, I never considered a skirt with a silk stripe.  It works, in a big way.

What do you think? Will you wear tuxedo pieces this fall?

{things i made} memphis-style ribs

Being from a very northern part of the United States, I'm not going to pretend I know enough about barbecuing to have picked a side in the nation's rib-cooking war. Sauced or mopped? Dry rubbed or smoked? Babyback or spareribs? One thing I do know is that this particular recipe is super easy and super tasty. By cooking the ribs partially in a covered tray, they retain moisture and remain tender. The dry spice mixture, thick and paste-like as it mixes with the meat,  is the perfect combination of hot and sweet. To be honest, the finished product is so flavorful I never find myself missing sugary BBQ sauce.

Ingredients

For the rub:

3 racks baby back pork ribs, or 2 racks pork spareribs (about 7 pounds total)

1/4 cup sweet paprika

5 teaspoons dark brown sugar

1 teaspoon salt

4 teaspoons black pepper

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1 1/2 teaspoons chili powder

1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder

1 1/2 teaspoons dry mustard

1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin

For the mop:

2 cups cider vinegar

1/2 cup yellow mustard

1 teaspoon salt

Preparation

1. Combine the dry ingredients in a small bowl and stir. Rub 2/3 of the mixture over the ribs on both sides, then transfer the ribs onto racks placed inside aluminum tray(s). Cover and let cure in the refrigerator, 4 to 8 hours.

2. Mix together the cider vinegar, mustard, and salt in a pot and heat until boiling. Cool.

3. Cook the ribs in the trays and covered on a covered grill for 1 hour.

4. Uncover and brush with mop sauce. Place ribs directly on grill and cook about an 1/2 hour longer for baby back ribs, 1/2 to 45 minutes hour longer for spareribs (the ribs are done when the meat is very tender and has shrunk back from the ends of the bones). About fifteen minutes before the ribs are done, season them with the remaining rub.

5. Remove from heat. Cut the racks into individual ribs and serve.

{things i covet} braided flat sandal by chloé

[Photo from Zoe - in Petal, was $696, available here]

I love my high(est) heels, but in the summer my favorite everyday footwear is a neutral flat sandal. Not only do they match everything and elongate your leg, they're comfortable (and therefore perfect for outdoor events, long walks, and late nights). These braided beauties by Chloé are perfect examples of the kind of sandal I'm talking about: a flat sole, supple leather, and the perfect shade of brown that would match my tan.

{things i learned} yesterday i heard the rain

[rain pooled on lincoln center's fountain]

[a sweltering 99 degrees according to the car's dashboard reading]

[the cutest birthday party favor: imported italian cards

[a parked bright red scooter that always makes me smile]

[a perfectly light summer salad of arugula, goat cheese, almonds, and raspberries]

On Wednesday we had the most spectacular series of summer storms: lightening strikes in every direction, powerful bursts of soaking rain that felt warm against your skin, and clouds that dramatically rolled in and out of sight (these photos collected by The Daily Mail sum things up incredibly well). Sure, it was in the middle of the afternoon commute (all I was thinking about were my poor brown sandals) and yes, it ushered away the heat wave that had come before it (temperatures have slipped from the 90s to the 70s), but it was one of those days that disturbs your routine and yet still made you smile.

p.s. check back later today…I'll have posted an amazing (a.k.a three winners) sunglasses giveaway from Guess Eyewear!

{things i wore} gold collar necklace

I've always loved Cleopatra–yes, mostly the glitzy version that's come down to us via Elizabeth Taylor. I'm more than familiar with the historical inaccuracies of that portrayal but I think it's reasonably safe to say that Hollywood's creation and the real queen of the Nile both had their share of fabulous jewelry. The name of this 'Cleopatra' collar then, sent by the fabulous folks over at Karen London along with a matching 'Alexandria' ring, had me fascinated from the start. When I finally saw it in person I was floored. It more than deserves its title–there is something very regal about its broad hammered gold. Karen London is brand you should definitely check out. Loved by celebrities–Miley Cyrus has this same necklace and ring–and lots of other bloggers, her designs are bold, modern, and elegant but remain amazingly wearable.

What do you think? Do you have a favorite piece from Karen's line?

p.s. Get excited…I'm posting a brand-new giveaway tomorrow sponsered by Guess Eyewear and their 'Shades of Summer Playlist' event that launches July 20. Stay tuned–there will be THREE winners! x
